For the past year, Renaissance students have explored how to enhance East LA’s quality of life through active transportation and people-friendly streets. They started by projecting 50 years into the future, imagining the East LA in which they would want to live and discussing how to manifest their visions. Keeping climate, culture, and quality of life in mind, the class focused on transportation. Students learned about transportation planning, active transportation, street safety, Complete Streets, and mobility justice. They studied Complete Streets projects around the world and also met and worked with leaders in the field and local residents.
The class is part of Public Works’ East Los Angeles Active Transportation Education and Encouragement Project, led by Public Matters. The project’s goal is to build a culture of support for active transportation in East LA by linking it to the area’s culture and values; central to its work is training a young generation of active transportation advocates and ambassadors.
